1946 to 1962 Cake #7
Texas Sheath Cake
The Texas Sheath cake is a Texas favorite. It is a chocolate cake, spiced with some cinnamon, baked in a single layer in a sheet pan. After the cake comes out of the oven, a warm chocolate pecan icing gets poured over it. A pastry chef named Sarah Hooten said, "It may be the most unattractive cake you've ever seen, but it is delicious and nostalgic and everyone in Texas loves it." She added, "To be honest, if you asked me to name my favorite birthday cake, it would be this cake!!!" Some Texans call it "sheet" cake and some call it "sheath", which may be a Scottish pronunciation.
My Experience:
Making this cake was very enjoyable. The steps and ingredients are simple and the house smells great the whole time. Between toasting the pecans and melting the chocolate and butter, the delectable aromas just keep on coming. The whole process only takes about an hour. I am a chocolate fan so I enjoyed this cake, it was a bit too much for my husband though. Interestingly, I found that I liked it even more when it was cold out of the fridge.
