1870 to 1899 Cake #10
1-2-3-4 Cake
This cake is so simple, it tells you the recipe in the name; 1 cup of butter, 2 cups of sugar, 3 cups of flour, and 4 eggs plus a little leavening and a liquid. This cake is one of the most popular and basic American cakes. It is believed that the earliest mention of the recipe was in the St Joseph Herald newspaper, in 1870. This is the layer cake that is considered to be the standard that all other layer cakes should measure up to. The chocolate icing makes this the embodiment of American cake.
My Experience:
I enjoyed making this cake. The ingredient list was short, the recipe was simple and the cake turned out so soft and scrumptious! I am not surprised that this cake became an American staple and was passed down so eagerly from generation to generation. Anyone can do it, it looks nice, and it tastes great! I took this one to a work meeting and my co-workers ate it all up. One of them even asked for the recipe and being my dorky self, I said, "it is just 1, 2, 3, 4!"
