1917 to 1945 Cake #3
Black Walnut Cake
Walnuts grow in fertile limestone soil in areas such as Pennsylvania, Kentucky, the Carolina's, and other Midwest states. German settlers actually looked for the presence of black walnut trees before they decided to stop and establish settlements. Western Pennsylvania became a popular place for that reason. Many family recipes from this region include the nut meats of the black walnut, especially fudge and pound cake.
My Experience:
This recipe was very simple and only had 8 ingredients. It only took about an hour from start to finish. The cake feels more like a quick-bread when you are eating it and it is decent, but not too exciting. It is understandable that this became a regular item in the early household due to how easy it is and since the nuts grew right outside their homes.
