Gooey Butter Cake

This cake is the signature cake of St Louis, though many believe that it did not originate there. Many German immigrants settled in the Midwest and opened German bakeries. Many of them served a cake called Butter Kuchen. These cakes were described as "runny" butter cakes. Cake mix versions were created, but use cream cheese instead of yeast so they are a bit different.

My Experience

Even though the total time from start to finish is 3 hours, this cake is not difficult to make. Two of the hours is just wait time to let the yeast do its thing. The cake consists of a bottom "cake" or dough layer and on top of that there is a filling, which is mostly butter and sugar.

The verdict: It was scrumptious! It is homey and gooey and delicious. My neighbors loved it too!
