The Wacky Cake

In the 1940' and 50's, at home demonstration meetings were very common. Well manicured agents(teachers) would travel around to different homes and teach a group of women about the newest dessert that was the rage of that season. The Wacky cake was introduced to at-home cooks as an "emergency dessert" in case of any last minute or unexpected house guests. This cake was so popular because it uses ingredients that most pantries always have and it is so simple to make. Every ingredient is thrown into one pan and then water is poured over the top and once everything is completely stirred it goes right into the oven. The end result is a moist chocolate cake that can be topped with any kind of icing or topping.

My Experience

The Wacky Cake recipe only has 3 steps; sift the dry ingredients into the pan, make 3 holes and fill the holes with the wet ingredients and then pour water over the whole thing and stir. That is it, and then it goes right into the oven. This is one cake that I knew I should make with my kids because they can pretty much do the entire thing by themselves. I actually made a recording of our whole process. It is posted on the Smooshies Bakery Facebook page if anyone wanted to see how it comes together. It is so easy and it actually tastes pretty good. I ate WAY too much of the cake myself, I should have shared more of it with my neighbors:)
