Julia Child's Queen of Sheba Cake 1963-1979
This cake was featured in the first volume of Mastering the Art of French Cooking by Julia Child, Simone Beck, and Louisette Berthoole, in 1961. The Queen of Sheba Cake has strong chocolate, rum and almond flavors. It is soft and creamy, and uses the classic technique of using beaten egg whites as the rising agent.
My Experience
I felt like this cake had a lot of steps for how small it turns out to be. It was fun experimenting with a cake that Julia Child had done on the 100th episode of her tv show. Grinding the almonds to a meal-like texture gave the cake an interesting mouth feel. I am not a huge fan of rum, so this cake was not my favorite.
