Robert Redford Cake
"In the late 1970's, when actor Robert Redford was in New York and dining in Hisae's restaurant in Greenwich Village, he supposedly was served a slice of this dense and flavorful chocolate honey cake. Chocolate News magazine ran the recipe with Redford's photo, which is where cake maven Maida Heatter first saw it. With her usual wit, Heatter says she broke the 4-minute mile getting into her kitchen to try out the recipe. And she later traveled to New York and dined at Hisae's to sample the cake. Heatter deemed her recipe better than the restaurant cake and included this cake in her Maida Heatter's New Book of Great Desserts in 1982. She named the cake after Robert Redford, and while other cakes have been named for the heartthrob actor, this is the original."
My Experience:
This recipe let me choose between using hazelnuts and almonds. I chose almonds because I like them better and I already had some. This is a very rich cake with lots of eggs, butter, chocolate, and honey. I think the ground up almonds and honey gave it an interesting texture and flavor.
